To be really honest, online petitions don't help anything. What you need to do is appeal directly to people who matter. This means:
  • Juan Martinez, our department head
  • The dean
  • The provost
  • And if you can find out who he is, the president of the University.
Write letters, collect names, make calls if you can.

indeed, these are things i have also done, but i am doing the petition online -and- off to show the support of the students.. i'm not sure if it'll amount to anything, but at least i'll know that i went down fighting for a program i def. believe in!

many thanx for the info though, and if you'd rather sign the paper petition instead of the online one, we can meet up so you can do so!

    best wishes,

As long as that petition goes into a hard copy and is in the hands of those people I think it's a good idea. Too often those petitions sit idly online or tacked to some wall never getting signed.

Best wishes saving that department. The printmaking studio has pretty much been dead in the water since they forced Duncan out of there and I was pretty down about that. I'm a little surprised still that they're shutting down jewlery with the amount of people who take the class and that they had someone graduate recently with jewlery. No one who graduates does ceramics seriously and they're in no danger of getting shut down.

I'll be glad to add my name to your petition though. I assume you're around sculpture so I hope I see it around there.

oh yes, i def. plan on making the online petition into a hard copy, otherwise there wouldn't be much of a point to it, would there?! ~:-] it truly does suck (for lack of better words) about the demise of the art department, goodbye to glass + printmaking + maybe even jewelry soon enough, and there goes diversity in the arts!

i am always around the ceramics/metalwork/sculpture building on Tues/Thurs from about 10am-4:30pm, so if you're around - ask around for me, EJ, and i'm sure someone will know where i am!

and thanx for the myspace link, i'd love to post a link to the petition in that community, but i don't have a MySpace account! maybe i can get someone else to do it for me? hhmmmm?!......

    best wishes,
    ~EJ

Oh, you're a friend of Peter's, right? I know who you are.
I'm the guy that never works on his robots in ceramics.

the petition IS going to the people who matter. it says right there:

To: Professor Juan Martinez, Art and Art History Department, and President Modesto A. Maidique

so i'm assuming that both the online and hard-copy petitions will be going to the people you mentioned.
